Gathering Among the Rubble
Thousands of Palestinians packed into Gaza’s ruined streets on Sunday night to watch the FIFA World Cup final. Noise erupted across the area as the referee blew the final whistle, marking Spain’s 1-0 extra-time victory against Argentina. People faced continuous military strikes, severe displacement, and wreckage, yet entire neighborhoods came together outdoors to share a brief moment of relief.
Without power grid access and with fuel in short supply, young locals set up makeshift screens powered by small petrol generators. Thick crowds stood near broken storefronts, street cafes, and crowded tent camps holding over two million displaced residents. Once Spain scored, red and yellow flags waved beside Palestinian flags, and people hugged in the dark to mark the win.
A Special Connection
For many residents in Gaza, backing Spain was not just about sports. Spain officially recognized Palestinian statehood in May 2024. The country also pushed repeatedly for a ceasefire and open humanitarian aid routes, winning strong local respect throughout the tournament.
The connection felt personal to young spectators. Earlier this year, Barcelona’s teenage star Lamine Yamal carried a Palestinian flag over his shoulders during his team’s trophy parade. That action left a lasting mark on Gaza’s youth, building a direct bond with the player and his national side.
Hope Amid Great Hardship
Everyday conditions across Gaza remain brutal. Families face bad water shortages, wrecked hospitals, and constant overhead drone surveillance. Threat of night strikes normally clears the streets early, making public gatherings rare for people living in plastic tents.
Still, football took priority for two hours. Families, teenagers, and older residents paused their daily survival efforts and felt linked to football fans across the globe.
Celebrations Across The Region
Similar crowds met across nearby displacement sites late into the night. While these brief gatherings gave people a rare moment of relief, they happened under constant danger. Israel’s ongoing military campaign and relentless airstrikes continued across the Gaza Strip, leaving residents fully aware that nowhere in the enclave is truly safe.
