A Family Fight Ends in Ashes
A quiet Sunday afternoon in Kampung Sungai Baru, Jitra, turned chaotic when a family argument escalated into total destruction.
An angry man allegedly set his own mother’s house on fire around 3:15 PM, leaving neighbors watching in shock as thick, heavy smoke poured from the windows. It did not take long for the roof of the two-story house to be completely swallowed by bright orange flames.

Cousin Spots the Suspect Leaving the Scene
The disaster could have easily spread to nearby properties if not for an alert relative. The suspect’s 28-year-old cousin, who was trading just outside the building, saw the man walk into the house. About half an hour went by before the suspect walked back out and left.

Right after that, the cousin saw dark smoke billowing from the living room windows. Realizing what was happening, he immediately dialed emergency services, stopping the massive blaze from leaping onto neighboring homes.
Eighty Percent of the Family Home Destroyed
Fire crews rushed to the scene to battle the raging inferno. The distress call hit the Jitra Fire and Rescue Station at 3:25 PM, as confirmed by Senior Fire Superintendent Noor Azhar Tajuddin. Teams got to work using high-pressure water hoses to knock down the flames and douse the hot spots.

Once the smoke cleared, it was obvious that about 80 percent of the two-story building had been completely ruined. While a small white car parked right next to the house somehow escaped the heat, the house itself is now a burnt-out shell. The suspect’s 60-year-old mother, who currently lives in Pokok Sena, was not inside when the fire broke out.
A Suspect with a Heavy Criminal Record
Kubang Pasu district police chief Superintendent Mohd Radzi Abdul Rahim confirmed officers arrested the suspect shortly after the incident. A local court has remanded him for five days to allow for a deep investigation.

It turns out this is far from his first run-in with the law. The man already has five prior criminal records under his belt, including drug offenses, illegal gambling in Perlis, criminal intimidation, and two separate convictions for causing bodily injury. Police are investigating him under Section 436 of the Penal Code for mischief by fire, an offense that carries a maximum prison sentence of 20 years.
