Passenger Blocks Empty Seat With Bag On Crowded MRT Train, Sparking Etiquette Debate
Facebook

A passenger on a crowded Singapore MRT train has drawn attention after placing a large bag on an empty seat during a busy journey, leaving at least one commuter without a place to sit. A photograph of the incident was later shared online, showing the woman looking at her mobile phone while her black bag occupied the seat beside her.

The train appeared to be busy, with several passengers standing nearby and few seats available. According to the commuter who shared the incident, they were walking towards the empty seat before noticing that it was being used for personal belongings instead of another passenger. The commuter also claimed they politely asked the woman to move the bag but received no response.

A Seat Taken By Personal Belongings

The photograph shows the passenger seated near the train window while her handbag rests on the next seat. Other commuters can be seen sitting close by, suggesting the carriage was already crowded during the journey. The image quickly attracted attention because available seating is often limited during peak travel hours.

The commuter who shared the post said they approached the woman directly and requested that she remove the bag so someone else could sit down.

They alleged that the request was ignored, and the bag remained on the seat throughout the encounter. The claim has not been independently verified.

Public Transport Courtesy

Singapore’s public transport system regularly promotes considerate behaviour among commuters. Inside MRT trains and stations, passengers are reminded to give priority seats to those in need, move further into train cabins, and avoid blocking doors or walkways during busy periods.

Transport operators also encourage commuters to keep personal belongings on their laps, under their seats, or on the floor whenever possible. These simple practices help maximise available seating and improve comfort for everyone, especially during the morning and evening rush hours when trains carry large numbers of passengers.

Ongoing Focus On Shared Spaces

As Singapore’s rail network continues to serve millions of journeys each week, courteous behaviour remains an important part of daily commuting. Small actions, such as keeping seats available for passengers instead of personal items, can help make travel smoother during crowded periods.

The latest incident has once again highlighted the importance of sharing limited public space responsibly. While the circumstances surrounding the encounter remain unclear, the photograph has renewed attention on everyday MRT etiquette and the role that considerate behaviour plays in maintaining a comfortable journey for all commuters.
