Senate Approves War Powers Resolution

The United States Senate voted on Tuesday to curb President Donald Trump’s authority to launch further military action against Iran without approval from Congress, in a rare bipartisan challenge to his war powers.

The War Powers Resolution passed by 50 votes to 48, with four Republican senators breaking ranks to vote with Democrats: Susan Collins, Lisa Murkowski, Rand Paul and Bill Cassidy. Republican senators Mitch McConnell and Dave McCormick were absent.

Limits Proposed On Military Action

The resolution would require Trump to seek congressional authorisation before ordering further strikes against Iran, except in response to an imminent threat to the United States or its allies.

Supporters said the US Constitution gives Congress – not the president – the power to declare war, arguing that the White House should not be able to wage an extended military campaign without lawmakers having a say.

Measure Clears Congress

The measure had already passed the House of Representatives. As a concurrent resolution under the 1973 War Powers Act, it does not require the president’s signature.

The Trump administration has argued such measures are unconstitutional and non-binding, and the legal force of the resolution remains disputed.
