Want Extra Rice on a Thai Food App? You Have to Admit You’re the ‘Chubby Kid’

Having your favorite foods brought right to your door should be enjoyable. You walk through a menu, pick a couple of items and wait for fast food to be delivered. But it can suddenly become a hectic emotional ride trying to get a basic lunch from the local Thai establishment.

A user of a widely-used delivery service found an odd feature that took the marketing of the standard corporate envelope to a whole new level.

The Savage Rice Option

It occurred as an attempt to make the portion of rice for a traditional dish with minced meat and holy basil. Most of the modern platforms have standard phrases like Extra Large Portion” or “Hungry Size” to encourage more purchases without any risk of offending, but this digital platform was the complete opposite.

In between the standard normal and small portions was a completely unhinged third option, which was bluntly called: “Add Some More Rice For The Chubby Kid.

The Dek Aoun Inside Joke

With the internet preparing to go into full meltdown mode and starting an immediate cancel culture campaign, it’s time for some cultural context. This will be a very popular and loving joke in Thailand. The word is derived from “Dek-Aoun,” a local nickname given to a big eater or a lover of food, not a malicious insult.

The platform is just adopting filter-free, meme-style humor to get hungry customers to make a somewhat tongue in cheek declaration of their great hunger.

High-Key Viral Humor

Despite its adorably crafted cultural context, it’s first-class internet comedy to see a digital platform go all out with the raw unprofessional stuff. It’s a hardcore marketing ploy that provides a big dose of reality for your additional carbs. If you’re the type of person who wants to order a big afternoon meal and keep it a secret, this is the place to beat you down. It’s so vicious, so mad, and so funny.

In the end, this crazy situation is a great example of the really hilarious nature of regional uses and their verbatim translations. One thing is for sure, if you want all those tasty carbs then you will have to take on the new role.
