Tijuana Chosen as Iran’s World Cup Base
The Mexican border city of Tijuana is preparing to serve as the official base for the Iranian national football team during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, following a decision by United States authorities to bar the squad from staying on US soil outside of official match days.

Aerial footage shows the Estadio Caliente, home to the Mexican football club Xolos de Tijuana, which local officials confirm will serve as Team Melli’s primary training and preparation headquarters.
Local Support for Team Melli
“For the people of Tijuana, the Iranians are friends, we consider them friends. They are a people, I see it that way, a poor people, with few opportunities. And right now they are invaded and attacked by a world power,” said local artisan Pedro Tellez.
Under the strict logistical arrangement, the Iranian delegation will be required to return to Mexican territory immediately following each of their tournament fixtures in the United States.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has officially backed the hosting agreement, coordinating directly with Grupo Caliente, the corporate owner of the Tijuana-based club, to facilitate the team’s arrival.
Local trader Joel Galeana embraced the news, viewing the international arrival as a point of civic pride.
“We are a very fraternal border with all countries… I am proud that they come from other countries, foreigners, to visit here in Tijuana,” said Galeana.

Other residents echoed the sentiment, arguing that global geopolitical tensions should remain separate from the spirit of the tournament.
“Regardless of the conflict they bring, sports are completely different. Welcome. There is no problem,” stated Tijuana resident Luis Sapien.
Visa Challenges Cloud Plans
However, deep logistical uncertainty still overshadows the arrangement. Iranian football authorities have revealed that the delegation has not yet been granted the necessary entry visas by the United States government, complicating travel plans just days before the tournament.

Despite the bureaucratic deadlock, the Iranian squad is tentatively scheduled to land in Tijuana between June 5 and 7.
Security Preparations Underway
At the same time, municipal authorities and security forces have already initiated coordinated logistical and counter-terrorism operations to secure the Iranian team’s stay in the border city for the duration of the World Cup.
