Major Fire Devastates Manila Neighbourhood

Residents in Binondo District in Manila have been left homeless after a major fire swept through a densely populated neighbourhood, destroying hundreds of homes and forcing families to search the ruins for survival.

Footage shows smoke still rising from burnt-out structures, with residents wading through debris and salvaging what little they can from the wreckage.

Locals described how they were suddenly ‘back to zero’. One resident, Marilyn, said she had lost everything, including both her home and source of income.

“I hope that the government will help us because we have nothing now. I’m a part-time sweeper, and I don’t have a regular job,” Marilyn remarked, “It’s difficult for us, especially for the kids, we’re messed up.”

Others spoke of the difficulty of rebuilding, with Analiza noting that most houses were destroyed in the area.

“It’s saddening because most of the houses here were burnt down, we don’t have a livelihood and worst, our shelter is gone […] We don’t know how or where to start again,” she explained.

Authorities Investigate Cause Of Blaze

Authorities stated the fire broke out on Saturday afternoon in Binondo’s Delpan area and quickly tore through a tightly packed informal settlement built of light materials.

Strong winds and dense housing reportedly fuelled its rapid spread. While the Bureau of Fire Protection reported the official cause remains under investigation, local disaster officials believe a faulty electrical connection may have sparked the blaze.

Thousands Displaced After Homes Destroyed

Firefighters battled the blaze for hours before finally bringing it under control. Thousands of families were left displaced as entire rows of homes were reduced to ashes.

Relief teams have since set up emergency support points, focusing on food, water and temporary shelter.
