The UK government is once again moving toward a possible ban on so-called conversion practices, after years of debate and repeated promises that have yet to become law.
The plan was included in the latest King’s Speech, which sets out the government’s upcoming legislative agenda. Although it is delivered by King Charles III, the speech itself is written by the government of the day.

A government note says the draft bill would target “abusive conversion practices,” including attempts to change or suppress someone’s sexual orientation or gender identity. This suggests the proposal would cover both LGBTQ+ sexual orientation and trans identities.
Same conversation, years in the making
This is not a new policy direction.
Since around 2018, successive UK governments have pledged to ban conversion therapy. But despite repeated announcements, the legislation has been delayed, revised, or dropped at different stages.
LGBTQ+ advocacy groups, including Stonewall, have continued to call for clearer action, arguing that the ongoing delays leave affected communities without proper legal protection.

What this actually means right now
The proposal is not law at this point. It is still a draft bill and will have to pass Parliament before it becomes binding.
If it is eventually passed, it would primarily apply to England and Wales, while Scotland and Northern Ireland continue to develop their own approaches. The government says the aim is to prevent harmful practices while still allowing legitimate medical and counselling support.
