Off-Duty Malaysian Nurse Becomes Hero After Saving Choking Woman At Café

It was a peaceful morning at Pantai Hospital Ipoh until one woman started choking on food as she was eating at a café located on the hospital premises. It was held on 4 May 2026 in the Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf area. A nurse, not on duty at the time, heard the sound of someone asking for assistance and ran to assist the woman as the members of her family were crying out for help and the locals were frightened.

The emergency occurred when the nurse, Siti Maisyura, finished her night duty. She was waiting at the hospital for her son’s follow-up appointment when she noticed the commotion near the café area. After witnessing the woman having difficulty breathing, she promptly responded despite being off duty and without off-duty gear.

Nurse Responds Immediately

The woman reportedly suddenly choked on her food and caused panic among people around her, according to information shared by the hospital on Instagram. Some of the family members cried for help; others were shocked. The hospital later explained that fast action was very important because choking emergencies can become dangerous within seconds.

Maisyura immediately moved toward the victim and prepared to help. She was calm and focused in the midst of the stress and assessed the woman’s condition. Hospital staff later stated that her quick reaction helped prevent the situation from becoming more serious.

Heimlich Maneuver Saves Woman

Using her medical training and experience, Maisyura performed the Heimlich maneuver, a first aid method used to remove objects blocking a person’s airway. The technique involves applying pressure to help force the blockage out so the person can breathe normally again.

Within moments, the obstruction was removed successfully. The woman was finally able to breathe again as the frightening situation came to an end. Hospital representatives later praised Maisyura for staying calm and acting bravely during the emergency.

“In that terrifying moment, Maisyura was more than a nurse; she was a lifeline,” the hospital said in its statement.

Hospital Praises Nurse’s Actions

Pantai Hospital Ipoh also said Maisyura’s actions reflected this year’s International Nurses Day theme announced by the International Council of Nurses: “Our Nurses. Our Future.” Empowered Nurses Save Lives.”

The hospital’s post about the incident later attracted attention online as more people learned about the nurse who stepped forward to save a life even after finishing her shift.
