A Singapore resident has sparked widespread discussion online after sharing concerns about an elderly neighbour whose husband has seemingly disappeared for months, alongside a series of unsettling incidents that left their family searching for answers.
In a post on the r/asksingapore subreddit, the resident explained that their next-door neighbour, an elderly woman, had long lived with her husband. However, they realised they had not seen the man around the estate in months.

While they still regularly spotted the woman, the resident said several unusual incidents and changes in behaviour had made their family increasingly uneasy.
“Some of you will think, then why need welfare check,” the user wrote. “But things have been happening in my house and my family thinks it has something to do with our neighbour.”
Husband Disappeared, Strange Changes Followed
The resident said their neighbour’s household routine had changed noticeably around the same period the husband was no longer seen.
According to the post, the elderly couple used to send festive treats during both Chinese New Year and Hari Raya “every year without fail.” However, after the husband stopped appearing, the gifts suddenly stopped too.

“It’s not being petty,” the user clarified. “It’s more like a noticeable change.”
The resident also claimed the neighbour had begun placing various superstitious items around her home, including leaves at the doorway and patio area. Around the same period, the family reportedly heard loud chopping noises coming from the neighbour’s home daily.
“Every single day,” the resident wrote, adding that the sounds eventually stopped after about a week.
Visitor’s Question Raised More Confusion
The situation became even stranger after someone reportedly arrived at the neighbour’s unit looking for them.
According to the resident, the visitor asked whether “the mother and daughter” were at home. That immediately stood out.
“Daughter?” the resident wrote. “It has always been only her and the husband.”
The user added that they had never noticed regular visitors, deliveries, or mail activity at the home.
Family Shared Fears Over Unexplained Experiences
The resident also described several incidents their family believed were difficult to explain. Among them were claims of foul smells appearing around the house, kitchen items changing places, and their patio mysteriously becoming spotless after returning from a two-week holiday despite previously being dirty before leaving.
The user also alleged that their father had repeatedly woken up with scratches on his body.
“My dad has been waking up with scratches all over his shoulder and back,” the resident later wrote in the comments.
“It has been super painful for him.”

The post also included claims of hearing giggling sounds and sensing unexplained figures around the home. The resident stressed that these experiences had led the family to pursue religious remedies. However, they said the effects only seemed temporary.
“We have done multiple ruqyah but to no avail unfortunately. It always stops awhile then starts again.”
Redditors Suggested Practical Explanations First
Despite the increasingly unusual theories raised in the post, many commenters urged caution before jumping to conclusions. Some suggested that there could be ordinary explanations behind the husband’s absence.
One user wrote:
“Maybe the husband overseas trip etc, you never know.”
Others encouraged the resident to ask surrounding neighbours for information or approach local authorities if genuinely concerned.
Family installs CCTV amid ongoing concerns
As discussions continued, the resident later shared an update. The family had purchased CCTV cameras and planned to install them around the home, including one facing both their patio and the neighbouring unit.
The user said they hoped the cameras would help identify anyone entering or leaving the area and provide answers about the disturbances. For now, however, many Reddit users remained divided between concern, curiosity and attempts to find more grounded explanations.
One commenter summed up the mood simply:
“Wah no suggestions for you as it seems unsolvable but I’m intrigued.”
