A Singaporean employee took to Reddit to ask a question many remote workers may relate to: when does a friendly colleague become emotionally exhausting?
The employee described dealing with a coworker who often mixed professional and personal boundaries because she used work-related discussions to share details about her non-work activities.

The colleague maintained a pattern of sending memes through work group chats while she sent personal messages to her colleagues which included discussions about her meals and shopping and her menstrual cycle and sexual activity.
The employee showed initial understanding toward others but their excessive sharing of personal information became too overwhelming for him to handle.
Personal Conversations Started Taking Over
One of the biggest frustrations raised was how often the colleague used work time to discuss personal matters.
The employee shared that the colleague would frequently make dramatic comments in work chats, including saying she was “going to die” or joking about wanting to “murder” difficult clients.
Additionally, the coworker allegedly complained openly about clients to management and often shared repeated updates about illnesses or medical appointments throughout the workday.

The employee also felt uncomfortable with how casually the colleague spoke about sensitive topics, eventually making comments about the employee’s own sex life as well. That moment appeared to become the turning point.
Afterwards, the employee decided to slowly create distance by responding only to work-related messages and ignoring personal conversations altogether.
But Setting Boundaries Came With Guilt
Since limiting conversations to professional matters, the employee said the colleague had stopped talking to them almost entirely.

Although the silence was described as a relief, the employee admitted feeling guilty and wondered if the colleague was now intentionally sulking.
Still, many Reddit users felt the employee had handled the situation appropriately.
One commenter said people who constantly overshare often “suck everyone’s energy” by redirecting conversations back to themselves.

Another user shared that they had experienced a similar situation with a colleague who openly discussed intimate details with nearly everyone in the office, including male coworkers.

Others believed the colleague’s withdrawal was itself proof that the boundaries had worked.
Community Response: “The Boundary Worked”
Responses from the Reddit community were largely supportive of the employee’s decision to pull back.
One commenter pointed out that the colleague’s sudden silence could simply be another way of seeking emotional attention.

“The sulking is actually confirmation the boundary worked,” the commenter wrote.
Many agreed that remote work environments can sometimes blur professional lines, especially when platforms like WhatsApp become spaces for both casual and work-related communication.
Professional, Not Personal
Although some users acknowledged that friendly workplace relationships are normal, many agreed there still needs to be a balance between openness and professionalism.
For this employee, the experience appeared to reinforce one key lesson: listening and being kind at work should not come at the expense of personal boundaries.
