A nightclub in Mexico City is going viral after revealing a pricing policy that charges U.S. citizens nearly $300 for entry, while people from other countries pay far less. Japan Club stated that the move serves as a political statement, not as a personal attack on Americans.

In the viral Instagram post, the club explained that the standard entry fee is 5,000 pesos. However, visitors from most countries receive a 93% discount, while Mexicans and other Latin Americans get 95% off. Students and teachers receive even bigger discounts. Americans, meanwhile, “don’t get a discount.”

The Club Calls it a Political Statement

Club owner Federico Crespo said the pricing system was partly a response to worsening Mexico-U.S. tensions under Donald Trump. He also linked it to growing frustrations around gentrification and “touristification” in areas like Roma and Condesa, where many locals feel foreigners are driving up living expenses.

After the post blew up online, the club clarified that the policy was not aimed at Americans as individuals. Instead, it described the move as a way to force conversations around politics, tourism, and the changing culture of the city.

Internet Reactions Were Split

The internet quickly divided over the club’s decision. Some people praised it as bold and hilarious, while others called it unfair and unnecessary. Several users also joked that avoiding the club was “not a loss.”

The club later added that the expensive entry fees paid by Americans would be redistributed among staff members instead of going directly to the business. It also stressed that it still appreciates American influence on music culture, especially genres like jazz, hip hop, house, and techno.

This is not the only instance either. The issue also seems to be currently under discussion in Europe, with restaurants in Paris being accused of being more expensive for tourists than for locals, leading to debate on the issue of fairness, the strain on tourism in major cities, and the growing gentrification. Some restaurants have been reported as charging different prices or offering various levels of service to locals vs. tourists. Together, these incidents reflect a growing global tension around tourism, pricing, and who cities feel like they are really built for.
