Arsenal Reach Historic Champions League Final

Arsenal beat Atletico Madrid 1-0 at the Emirates Stadium on Tuesday to seal a 2-1 aggregate win and reach the UEFA Champions League final for the first time in 20 years.

Footage shows home fans gathering outside the stadium to welcome their team’s bus with flares, while booing Atletico Madrid on arrival. Atletico players and head coach Diego Simeone were seen in despair as they left the stadium after the tie.

“It wasn’t meant to be. Of course, the most beautiful thing would have been to end by lifting the trophy, but it wasn’t possible. And now, talking and regretting things is too late,” Atletico goalkeeper Jan Oblak told the press.

Atletico Madrid React to Defeat

“If one team is superior in every aspect, dominates you and overwhelms you with chances, then it’s different. But I don’t think that was the case,” team captain Koke added. “The team had moments in the first half where we could have scored. In the second half as well. So you leave feeling even more hurt.”

Arsenal broke the deadlock late in the first half through Bukayo Saka’s close-range goal. Atletico struggled to breach the hosts’ defence after the break and ultimately fell to a 1-0 defeat.

Focus Turns to the Final in Budapest

“We played a great match, just like at the weekend in the league. I want to carry this energy into the next match and keep going like this […] I only want to win the Champions League. This is proof of all the effort we have made, of how we are playing and how strong we are,” expressed Arsenal’s Riccardo Calafiori.

The result also sent the London side into their first Champions League final in two decades. They will face either Paris Saint-Germain or Bayern Munich in Budapest in pursuit of the club’s first UCL title.

The UEFA Champions League final is scheduled for May 30 at the Ferenc Puskas Stadium in Budapest.
