Thrissur Pooram festival in Kerala, southwest India, was held as a scaled-down event this year following the recent fireworks facility blast in Mundathikode, which killed 15 and injured 40 people.
Footage filmed on Sunday shows decorated elephants taking part in a shortened Kudamattam, or umbrella-changing ceremony, as crowds cheered to traditional percussion music.
Although the traditional grand fireworks display was cancelled, crowds still gathered for the festival’s main rituals, including the firing of a ceremonial cannon in the early morning.
Security was also tightened in the area, with drones and CCTV deployed as organisers prioritised safety over the festival’s usual grandeur.
One of the event participants said the cancellation of the fireworks was disappointing, but understandable in light of the recent tragedy.
“Without the fireworks, it is sad. But we have to consider the tragedy and the feelings of those affected,” he said.
Another participant said Thrissur Pooram holds significance beyond Kerala, bringing together visitors from different regions.
“It is more than a festival. It brings together people, temples, elephants and music,” he said.
“It’s not only about the fireworks. It’s more about the melam (musical ensemble), the way it is organised, and how people gather around. That’s more important than the fireworks,” he added.
Thrissur Pooram is one of Kerala’s most famous temple festivals, often described as the ‘Mother of All Poorams.’
