Shock in Torrance Community
Locals in Torrance, California, said they were shocked after their neighbour, 31-year-old physics teacher Cole Tomas Allen, was identified as the suspected gunman in Saturday’s attack at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner in Washington, DC.

Footage shows residents speaking to reporters as police and FBI agents secured the area outside the suspect’s home.
Neighbours Describe an ‘Ordinary’ Man
“He seemed like a very ordinary person. You know, it’s just, I don’t know. He… You never expect it coming from this guy. He was a nice guy. Down to earth guy,” expressed Jason Moses, a junior high student tutored by Allen.
“Never said anything about Trump or anything like that. […] You wouldn’t expect him to be plotting some crazy, evil plan to kill the president. He was just quirky,” he continued.

A former student echoed that view, saying Allen ‘knew his stuff for sure’ and that he was ‘pretty shocked’ by the news. Other residents said they had not noticed anything unusual about the alleged gunman, describing him as an ordinary neighbour.
“It’s a little bit unfortunate, sad that you know we have someone in our county who wants to do, you know, some level of damage. […] But we’re also grateful that the agents there tonight were able to at least take the perpetrator down so that he cannot hurt anybody,” stated Torrance Mayor George K Chen.
Details of the White House Correspondents’ Dinner Incident
On Saturday, shots were reportedly fired near the main magnetometer screening area at the Washington Hilton Hotel, prompting Secret Service agents to evacuate guests from the conference room of the WHDC.
US President Donald Trump, First Lady Melania, Vice President JD Vance, and other Cabinet members were confirmed to be safe. One Secret Service officer was shot but saved by his bulletproof vest.

The suspect, identified by local media as Cole Tomas Allen, 31, of Torrance, California, was apprehended and then taken to the hospital for evaluation while investigators examine his motives. Officials said preliminary investigations indicate he may have acted alone.
Trump, who suggested he was likely the target, praised the Secret Service’s response at a subsequent White House press conference. “When you’re impactful, they go after you,” he said, slamming the assailant as a ‘very sick person’.
He also said that the Correspondents’ Dinner would be rescheduled within 30 days.
