Trump downplays replacement rumors
Donald Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio appeared to dismiss reports that Iran’s national team could be replaced by Italy in the upcoming World Cup, in his latest briefing from the White House on Thursday.

“I don’t think about it too much. That’s an interesting question,” Trump said. “Marco, can you make a statement on that, please? What do you think of that?”
Rubio clarifies concerns beyond athletes
Rubio followed up: “there’s nothing from the US has told them they can’t come. I mean, the problem with Iran, it would be not their athletes. It would be some of the other people that we want to bring with them, some of whom have ties to the IRGC.

We may not be able to let them in, but not the athletes themselves. But no one’s – I don’t know where that’s coming from, other than speculation that Iran may decide not to come and then Italy would fill their spot.”
Envoy raises idea amid FIFA silence
Italian-born US special envoy Paolo Zampolli reveald in a UK media interview that he had floated the idea to Trump and Fifa boss Gianni Infantino. Fifa has not responded.
