Sukma 2026 May Be Delayed Amid Economic Concerns
The Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, has proposed postponing the 2026 Malaysia Games (Sukma), pointing to rising costs and ongoing geopolitical tensions.
Speaking during the opening of the Selangor State Legislative Assembly in Shah Alam, the ruler raised concerns about the financial burden of hosting the multi-sport event, originally scheduled for August.

“In the current economic situation, I am of the view that it would be more appropriate for the event to be postponed until the crisis in the Middle East is resolved, and until the Shah Alam Stadium is fully completed.”
The Games were initially set to run from August 15 to 24, involving dozens of sports and hundreds of events across Selangor.
‘Singapore vs Selangor’ Football Fixture Cancelled
In a separate decree, the Sultan also called off the annual Sultan of Selangor Cup — a long-standing football rivalry between Selangor and Singapore.
The cancellation means this year’s highly anticipated “Singapore vs Selangor” clash will not take place.

Despite this, the ruler gave his consent for a replacement grassroots-level tournament — the Jubilee Cup — involving under-15 players from districts across Selangor, aimed at nurturing young football talent.
“Furthermore, football is the most popular sport among the people of Selangor,” he said.
Scaled-Down Plans Already in Motion
Prior to the Sultan’s remarks, Malaysia’s youth and sports minister had already indicated that Sukma 2026 would be scaled down due to the global energy crunch and its economic ripple effects.
Even with a reduced format, the event was expected to utilise more than 50 venues across nine districts, covering 37 sports and nearly 500 events.
The latest call to postpone, however, signals a more significant shift in plans.
A Historic Rivalry Put on Hold
The Sultan of Selangor’s Cup is an annual friendly football competition organised by the Football Association of Selangor, contested between Selangor FA and Singapore FA.
Originally known as the Regent of Selangor’s Cup, the tournament was renamed in 2003. It traditionally features two matches — Selangor Veterans vs Singapore Veterans, and Selangor Selection vs Singapore Selection.

After a seven-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the tournament returned in 2024 at the historic Merdeka Stadium, reviving one of Southeast Asia’s most recognisable football rivalries.
The next edition had been slated as another showcase of the enduring “Singapore vs Selangor” rivalry — but that momentum now pauses once again.
