Does Singapore Need a Flirting Masterclass to Fix Its Low Birth Rate?
Facebook

A funny video has gone viral on social media, claiming that Singapore needs a “masterclass” to flirt. In the video, a person jokingly says that even though Singapore is number one in everything, its flirting score is almost zero. He also says that if this situation continues, the country’s birth rate may decline further, which will become a kind of “national crisis.”

Amidst this humor, a real concern has emerged—Singapore’s total fertility rate, or TFR, has dropped to 0.87 in 2025, the lowest in history. As a result, the video has not only provided food for laughter but also brought to the fore an important social issue.

Flirting vs. Reality

The comments made in the video about flirting are funny to many. However, the reality is a little different. While flirting is helpful in starting a relationship, it does not guarantee a long-term relationship.

Many netizens believe that it is not possible to create real passion or a relationship with flirting alone. Rather, it requires consistent care and sincerity. So they wanted to convey that in love, not only words are more important but also real behavior.

Dating Experience

Netizens’ experiences also revealed some uncomfortable aspects. Some said that on the first date, personal matters such as salary were directly asked about. This disrupted the normal pace of the relationship, and many felt uncomfortable. Others said that despite politeness, there was a clear lack of natural flirting in the conversation.

As a result, dating often seemed very calculated or mechanical. These experiences show that the dating culture in Singapore is still challenging for many.

Concerns about TFR

There is a serious reality behind this funny video. Singapore’s TFR is set to drop to 0.87 in 2025, which is a cause for great concern for the government. Deputy Prime Minister Gan Kim Yong has referred to this situation as an “existential challenge.”

Because if this rate remains low for a long time, the population may decrease significantly in the future. Experts say that the low birth rate can affect the country’s economy and social structure. Therefore, the issue is not only a personal but also a national concern.

Netizen’s Reaction

Netizens’ reactions to the video were mixed. Some joked that Singaporean men really need to up their “game”. Others felt that the problem was not just flirting but a lack of depth in the relationship. Some, living in Singapore as foreigners, acknowledged this observation.

At the same time, many suggested that sincerity and natural communication are essential to building a relationship. All in all, the reality hidden behind the smiles seemed to be the most discussed.
