Decorated elephants paraded through Ayutthaya on Monday as thousands gathered to celebrate Songkran, turning the ancient city into a vibrant stage of colour, tradition, and water-soaked revelry to welcome the Thai New Year.

Footage shows elephants painted in intricate floral patterns moving through city streets as crowds joined in exuberant water-soaked activities.

“I love the party atmosphere. I love that it’s multiple days. I really love that there are elephants that are involved. A national water fight is good enough, but when you add elephants to the mix, then that’s just next-level stuff,” said a resident who recently moved to the area.

“Elephants are the national animal of Thailand, and we consider them to be noble creatures, symbols that have helped in battles and protect our nation,” a second explained.

The annual Songkran festival marks the Thai New Year and is widely observed across the country with water-based celebrations that represent renewal and good fortune.

Thailand marks Songkran each year in mid-April, with authorities in recent years promoting more controlled celebrations in major tourist areas to ensure public safety.
