Hundreds of protesters gathered in West Jerusalem on Saturday night, calling for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to resign and demanding an end to Israel’s ongoing military engagements.
Footage shows demonstrators holding placards reading ‘Stop the war’, ‘Refuse the death cult’, and ‘Give us back our country’, while chanting slogans, waving Israeli flags and beating drums.
“The current act of war, both in Lebanon and Iran, has no aim. It’s not that the Iranians or Hezbollah are good guys […], but a military operation is not the way to solve the problem. Definitely not in Lebanon,” said protester Amnon.
He accused Netanyahu of prolonging the conflict to divert attention from his ongoing legal cases.
“I don’t trust the Iranians, but I don’t trust the Israeli government as well. And I think that both are looking for a way to continue fighting. Remember that Netanyahu has a self-interest in going on with the fight since he has a trial that he’s trying to delay,” he said.
Another demonstrator, Ihair, said, “We’ve been in war since, I think, the birth of Israel, and I think that Netanyahu is one prime minister who doesn’t believe in peace processes. And for that, we think we should move him away from the office.”
According to reports, Israeli police detained three activists during the protest.
The demonstrations come after rulings by Israel’s High Court allowing wartime protests to continue despite government opposition, as tensions grow over efforts by some coalition figures, including Justice Minister Yariv Levin, to challenge judicial authority.
Protesters also accuse the government of using the war to deflect from domestic issues, including attempts to remove the Attorney General, curb the powers of the Supreme Court and avoid establishing a commission of inquiry into the October 7 security failures.
