Volunteers from the Catalan human rights group ‘Cooks for Peace’ prepared and delivered meals for activists who are handling logistics at the Port of Barcelona for the Global Sumud Flotilla, which will involve more than 70 ships carrying supplies and representatives from around the world in response to the ongoing economic blockade of Gaza imposed by Israel.

Footage from Friday shows dozens of volunteers gathering to cook and package food for crew members and organisers of the flotilla. Meals were loaded into vans and transported to the port, where they were distributed among the participants preparing for departure.

“I think it is very important to send a message to the world that we can build community and can push forward on problems that, let’s say, politics does not want to address,” said Julia, a volunteer who came from Madrid.

Julia added that she joined after learning about the initiative through a friend.

“The flotillas are important because, given the inaction of governments in helping the people of Gaza amid this genocide, only the response of humanity and ordinary people remains to break this blockade and ensure food reaches people who are dying,” she noted.

Michael, a 34-year-old Italian resident of Barcelona, said the initiative was important both locally and globally.

“I think this flotilla mission is extremely important, first of all for all humanity, to raise awareness and to try to build more community, and not let injustices go unanswered,” he said.

Organisers said Cooks for Peace has participated in previous flotilla efforts and other local initiatives, including support for vulnerable communities in Catalonia.

The new Global Sumud mission adds to previous attempts to send aid to Gaza by sea, several of which have been intercepted before reaching their destination. Despite this, organisers say they will continue to pursue these actions as a form of protest and humanitarian assistance.
