South Korean President Lee Jae-myung on Thursday praised Prabowo Subianto as being a reliable partner as the two countries strengthen their cooperation in clean energy, defence and critical minerals, among others, during the Indonesian President’s state visit to Seoul.

Footage shows Indonesia’s Prabowo arriving at the Blue House, greeted by President Lee at an official ceremony attended by soldiers in traditional Korean military uniforms, before receiving a guard of honour.

“We have opened up the skies of our two countries through the successful completion of our Fighter Aircraft joint Development project, I hope to strengthen cooperation in shipbuilding so our two countries can rise together as global maritime powers,” President Lee said during a joint press conference.

Both leaders confirmed that the joint strike fighter project, KF-21, is on track for completion in June 2026, agreed to pursue the follow-up IF-21 project, and discussed potential KF-21 sales to Indonesia.

“We will strengthen cooperation linking Indonesia’s big data and Korea’s AI technology to create synergies as we pursue an AI universal basic society,” he added.

Prabowo Subianto oversaw the signing of 10 MoUs between Indonesia and South Korea, covering strategic dialogue, critical minerals, offshore industry services, intellectual property protection, and financial cooperation.

“I am confident that these milestones will deliver meaningful and lasting benefits to our peoples, while further strengthening the bonds that unite us. We have many similarities in our history, and we have common interests,” Prabowo stated.

South Korean President Lee also noted Indonesia’s reliability and consistency in energy supplies, particularly liquefied natural gas (LNG), during times of geopolitical uncertainty.

“My state visit here takes place at a time when the world situation is full of uncertainty and danger. This makes relations between countries like Indonesia and Korea even more important,” Prabowo said.

“I believe we need to strengthen the economic partnership between the two countries to minimise the impact of the crisis,” Lee added.

The energy supply disruption comes after the US and Israel launched joint strikes on Iran on February 28. Tehran retaliated with attacks on Israeli and US assets in the region.

The escalation has disrupted key maritime routes, including the Strait of Hormuz, a critical chokepoint through which roughly one-fifth of global oil supplies typically pass.
