Brave Rescue Moment
In 2016, a simple walk near a river in Almaty turned into a dramatic rescue story. A dog slipped into the water near the Ulken River, which flows into the Sairan Reservoir. The steep riverbanks made it impossible for the animal to climb out. Its owner quickly climbed down to help, but he also got stuck.

People nearby quickly noticed the danger and moved without delay. They formed a human chain, holding each other tightly to reach the trapped pair. According to a video, the people formed a line and slowly reached toward the water, working together very well. This real moment later became one of the most shared rescue clips online.
Viral Global Attention
The video went fast on social media, and many people all over the world watched it. Reports said it gained around 15 million views on one major platform and another 6.5 million views on other sites. Many international news channels also showed the footage. According to a video, viewers admired how strangers worked together without fear. The rescue felt real and emotional, which made people watch and share it again and again. Even after many years, the story still lives in public memory. Interestingly, the names of the people who joined the rescue remain unknown, adding more curiosity to the event.
Monument Unveiled 2026
In March 2026, the city unveiled a special monument near the original rescue site. The sculpture shows a group of people connected in a chain. Each person holds the next one, showing unity and support. One figure stretches a hand outward beyond a fence so visitors can touch it.

This design allows people to feel connected to the rescue moment. Officials confirmed that private donors funded the project. The monument stands not only as art but also as a reminder of a powerful real-life event that brought people together in a difficult situation.
Art and Tribute
The artwork was made by Yerbosyn Meldibekov, a well-known modern artist from Kazakhstan. People can see his work in museums in cities such as Antwerp, Hong Kong, and Singapore. This monument is not the only tribute linked to animal rescue stories in the country.

In 2019 and 2020, artists created large murals in Almaty and Karaganda to honor Yerlan Nurgaliyev, a forestry inspector. He lost his life in January 2019 while chasing poachers who hunted saiga antelopes illegally. The murals show him holding a rescued saiga calf, based on a viral image. These artworks continue to keep powerful stories alive in public spaces.
