White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt refused to reveal who the US was supposedly negotiating with in Iran, as she spoke with reporters in DC on Wednesday.
“We’re not going to get into the details of these negotiations and conversations that continue to take place. As, of course, you can imagine, they are very sensitive diplomatic discussions,” she said.
Asked about ‘boots on the ground’ to secure the Strait of Hormuz ‘given that all of our allies have essentially said that they are unable or unwilling to help’, Leavitt replied: “That’s a hypothetical question.”
She also hit back at repeated claims Vice President JD Vance was not completely on board with the war – and why things had appeared to have ‘changed’ in recent days to make the VP “more of an active participant in these negotiations with Iran”.
“I don’t think anything has changed. The Vice President has always been a key member, the President’s right-hand man, and a key member of the President’s national security team,” Leavitt said.
The situation around the Strait of Hormuz – which handles around 20 per cent of global oil and LNG traffic – has seen prices surge since the attack on Iran. Donald Trump condemned his Western allies for refusing to help secure it, while Tehran has said the Strait “is open to friends and non-hostile countries, but closed to enemies and those who collaborate with them”.
