Catalina Mendoza, a 91-year-old woman, entered primary school for the first time in the district of El Congo, municipality of Santa Ana, after receiving school supplies delivered by the government of El Salvador as part of an initiative for those who believe in education at any age.

The woman attends school accompanied by her daughter, Teresa Tobar, 71, who is in the seventh grade of primary school.

Footage filmed on Tuesday shows both elderly women receiving classes at Centro Escolar El Congo, where Basic Adult Education is offered in the evening modality.

“I feel happy to be here. Happy, very happy because I had never entered a classroom before,” said the 91-year-old woman, who has recently learned to read and write.

For her part, her daughter Teresa Tobar said that for her it is a pride to come to school with her mother because “it was her great dream.”

“She [my mother] did not even know what a school looked like inside and now she is enjoying it. So when God takes her away, my mom will leave fulfilled and I feel that I will be very satisfied, very full because I pushed her to see that it was not too late to continue her dreams,” she said.

“I have already fulfilled all my dreams, the only thing I was missing was that I did not know what the 7th grade was like and now that I am in the 8th grade, well here I am fighting with everything and I love it,” she added.

At the same educational center, Catalina and Teresa received their 2026 school supply package along with other students, as part of a national logistics effort that guarantees school supplies for everyone.

According to authorities, more than 1.2 million Salvadoran students benefit from the initiative to receive free school materials, which include notebooks, pencils, backpacks and other basic supplies.
