Fundraiser Launched For 9th Year Supporting Migrant Workers

A community initiative is once again raising funds to support Muslim migrant workers and their families in Singapore.

On 24 February, the volunteer group SG Muslims 4 Migrant Workers announced that its 2026 zakat-eligible fundraiser is officially live. The campaign marks the ninth year of the initiative, which supports migrant workers facing emergencies, critical illnesses, or families left behind after a worker dies while employed in Singapore.

The organisers are aiming to raise at least $70,000 this year, encouraging the public to donate their zakat or other contributions during the month of Ramadan.

Donations can be made through PayNow using a QR code or by bank transfer, with details available on the group’s website.

How The $70,000 Will Be Used

According to the campaign page, the first $50,000 raised will go to funds managed by Migrant Mutual Aid (MMA), a ground-up network that assists migrant workers in crisis.

These include:

Fund for Bereaved Families (FBF)
This dedicated fund supports families of migrant workers who pass away while working in Singapore. The assistance is meant to provide basic financial support during a difficult period, allowing families time to grieve and stabilise their livelihoods.

Organisers say it is the only fund of its kind specifically designed for such situations.

Standing Solidarity Fund (SSF)
The emergency fund helps migrant workers facing urgent financial or medical needs.

It is often used in situations where workers require immediate medical treatment, cannot afford treatment costs, or face abrupt repatriation due to illness or injury.

The fund may also help workers escape abusive employment situations, where quick support is necessary.

Additional Support For Workers With Critical Illnesses

The remaining $20,000 — and any funds raised beyond the target — will be directed to the CritiCare Fund for Migrant Workers.

The fund was launched in December 2024 and focuses specifically on helping migrant workers with critical illnesses requiring outpatient treatment.

It is overseen by an independent council of doctors, insurance professionals, employment agents, and civil society representatives. Migrant Mutual Aid serves as one of the council members.

Organisers say the initiative fills a gap by providing targeted financial support for serious medical conditions that migrant workers may struggle to afford.

Why Migrant Workers Can Receive Zakat

The campaign also highlights that Muslim migrant workers are eligible recipients of zakat, the obligatory charitable contribution in Islam.

Religious scholars cited in the campaign explain that migrant workers may fall into several categories of asnaf, or eligible beneficiaries.

These include those who are:

  • Poor or needy
  • In debt
  • Travellers in a foreign land

Several scholars have publicly supported the campaign, emphasising that migrant workers who travel abroad to support their families are deserving of compassion and assistance.

They note that many workers help build the homes and infrastructure of the societies they work in, making it meaningful for communities to support them when hardship strikes.

Organisers Call for Community Support

With Ramadan often seen as a time of generosity and reflection, the organisers are encouraging supporters to donate, share the campaign, and help spread awareness.

In addition to individual donors, they are also inviting business owners to pledge contributions toward the campaign.

The group thanked supporters who have followed the initiative over the past nine years, expressing hope that the community will once again help them reach their fundraising goal.
