Reddit Post Shows Unusual Wildlife Moment
A Reddit user in Singapore shared a surprising wildlife sighting after spotting a pair of hornbills eating a chick along Holland Road.
Posting on r/singapore, user u/youcanreachmenow said the encounter happened on the evening of 3 March 2026. While they were aware that hornbills are omnivores, the sight was still unexpected.
“I knew they were omnivores but have never seen it in real life,” the user wrote.

“Very interesting to actually see it in real life after over 5 years in Singapore.”
The user added that their young child was fascinated by the birds but they avoided explaining exactly what the hornbills were eating.
“My 3 year old was pretty interested, although I didn’t want to tell him what they were eating lol.”
Photos attached to the post show the birds perched on a tree branch. In one of the images, a hornbill can be seen holding a small chick in its beak.
Netizens Debate What The Hornbills Were Eating
The images quickly sparked discussion among Reddit users, with many speculating about what the birds were feeding on.
Some commenters pointed out that animals often take advantage of easy food sources.

“When animals stumble upon free protein they aren’t gonna let it pass.”
Another user noted that opportunistic feeding behaviour is common across species.
“Sometimes even herbivores like cows can become opportunistic omnivores when the chance presents itself.”
Others initially wondered if the hornbills could have been eating their own chicks. However, several commenters disagreed.
“It’s common for birds to eat the weak offsprings to conserve energy for themselves and the strong offsprings. I think they were eating chicks of other bird species, not their own offsprings.”

The original poster later clarified the situation after observing the birds more closely.
“Correction it wasn’t their own. The larger two flew away from the tree and came back with them. Seemed apparent they got it from another bird’s nest.”
Another commenter agreed with the observation, writing:
“Agree. Doesn’t look like hornbill chick.”
Some Share Similar Encounters With Hornbills
A few users said the behaviour wasn’t entirely surprising, sharing their own encounters with the large birds.
One Redditor recalled witnessing a hornbill quickly catch and eat a pigeon.
“I’ve seen one just swallow a pigeon.”
Another described a moment they witnessed at Bird Paradise.

“Saw one stalking around its cage at Bird Paradise. Looked like a dinosaur. Then saw a mouse dash across its path… One swift peck and the hornbill had itself a snack.”
They added that the moment happened quickly — and fortunately without children nearby to witness it.
NParks: Oriental Pied Hornbills Are Omnivores
According to the National Parks Board, the species belongs to the Bucerotidae family and is known for its striking appearance, including black plumage, white patches and a large pale yellow bill.
While hornbills are often associated with fruit-eating, NParks says they are omnivorous. Their diet consists mainly of fruits but can also include small animals such as reptiles, birds and mammals.

Hornbills also have unusual nesting behaviour. When breeding, the female seals herself inside a tree cavity using a plaster made from mud and plant fibres, leaving only a narrow slit.
The male then gathers food and passes it through the small opening to feed the female and chicks until they are ready to emerge.
Previous Encounter in Marine Parade
This is not the first time Singapore residents have witnessed hornbills eating other birds. In May 2024, a similar sighting in Marine Parade drew attention online after a hornbill was seen feeding on a baby oriole near an HDB block.
The clip, shared in a wildlife Facebook group, showed the hornbill gripping the small bird in its beak while perched on a grassy patch near residential flats. Two other hornbills were reportedly watching from a nearby tree.

The woman who filmed the scene said the incident occurred near Block 59 Marine Terrace around 10am. She also noticed the oriole parents nearby, which attempted to chase the hornbill away. According to her account, the birds pursued the hornbill towards another block, possibly continuing to defend their nest.
Today, sightings like these serve as a reminder that while hornbills may look majestic perched among Singapore’s trees, they are also capable predators — quietly playing their role in the island’s urban ecosystem.
