Late Night Robbery

On 13 December, a 21-year-old woman of British origin was walking on the sidewalk of Surawong Road in front of the Grand Centre Point Hotel. About 0.50am, a man passed by her and appeared normal. After a few moments he came back with another motorcyclist man.

They both grabbed her bag behind her back and transpired to get away. The stolen goods were a Jim Thompson handbag, a silver iPhone 17 Pro Max, 2 Pandora bracelets, and approximately 3,000 baht in cash. Police immediately started to investigate the robbery in order to determine the suspects.

Police Investigation

Bang Rak police used CCTV footage and other evidence to track the culprits. They determined a 33-year-old delivery rider called Thanit. On 3 March, the officers, after getting a court warrant, arrested him outside a convenience store in the Ratchadaphisek neighborhood of Bangkok, Din Daeng. The cycle with which the crime was carried out was also taken as evidence. Police officials identified Thanit and were going to question him further.

Suspect’s Statement

In the interview, Thanit told him that he did not earn enough as a motorcycle taxi rider using apps. He claimed to have two wives to take care of. According to the police reports, Thanit confessed to the robbery, but he did not report who his accomplice was.

Investigators at Bang Rak Police Station were to further prosecute him. The police will further collect information about the case to preclude future occurrences.

Public Reactions

The case has attracted the internet and local attention. A dashcam video recorded by a Thai motorcycle taxi driver in Phuket showed that he picked up cash that had fallen on the road by a foreign couple and took it rather than giving it back to the couple.

Later, the foreign woman was picked up by some people passing by, including a convenience store worker who retrieved the money scattered on the ground and returned the money to the woman. These cases help to underline the speed with which individuals spot theft and respond, and others abuse the circumstance.

Safety Reminder

The police recommend that pedestrians and tourists be cautious, particularly during the night. One should be advised to carry personal belongings close by and avoid lowly lit streets. The fact that Thanit was arrested shows that proper investigation and prompt police response can apprehend the criminals. Police are yet to find the second suspect who had been involved in the robbery. The residents and traveling guests are urged to report any suspicious activity as soon as possible.
