There has been a renewed concern about tuberculosis, or TB infection, across the country. The Health Ministry said that 503 new TB patients were identified in the fifth week of the epidemic. This brings the total number of infected people this year to 2,571.

Health authorities said that the situation is being monitored and preventive measures have been strengthened. Everyone has been urged to be more vigilant ahead of the upcoming festivals and long holidays.
State-by-State figures
The highest number of infections among the states was recorded in Sabah, where a total of 614 cases were found. This was followed by Selangor with 476 and Sarawak with 257. In addition, Johor had 233 cases, and Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya had 202 cases combined.

These figures indicate that the pressure of infection is relatively high in some states. As a result, surveillance has been increased in the relevant areas.
Status of Other States
On the other hand, 148 cases were found in Penang and 144 in Kedah. 127 patients were identified in Perak. In addition, infections are relatively low in Kelantan, Pahang and Terengganu. Negeri Sembilan, Melaka, Perlis and Labuan have all reported fewer than 100 cases.

However, the health department says it is not right to assume that a low number does not mean there is no risk.
Call for Caution
The health ministry said that the festive season increases the risk of infection due to increased public gatherings. Therefore, it is important to follow proper cough and sneeze etiquette. At the same time, it has been advised to wear masks in crowded places.

Those who have symptoms of prolonged cough, fever, loss of appetite or unexplained weight loss have been asked to get tested at the nearest health center immediately. Authorities have stressed that this is not only a matter of personal safety but also a social responsibility.
