A spectacular cultural performance by the Indian diaspora in Malaysia captured public attention as 800 dancers came together to create a new milestone in the Malaysia Book of Records. The historic performance was performed at the high-profile Selamat Datang Modiji event on the evening of 7 February in the MINES International Exhibition and Convention Centre (MIECC) in the presence of India prime minister Narendra Modi and Malaysian prime minister Anwar Ibrahim.
A grand record attempt on one stage
Under the banner of the Indian Community Cultural Committee, around 800 dancers performed a single, continuous five-minute dance on one stage.

Officials officially named the record attempt the Largest Number of Dancers in One Choreographed Dance, showcasing a wide variety of Indian classical and folk dance forms performed by the Indian diaspora. According to sources, the dancers moved in perfect coordination, creating a powerful visual celebration of Indian culture abroad.
A miniature India in the form of dance
Organizers carefully planned the play as a mini India and combined several traditional dance forms from various regions in the performance.

Choreographers merged classical dance styles such as Bharatanatyam, Odissi, Kathak, Kathakali, Mohiniattam, Kuchipudi, and Yakshagana with energetic folk dances from Lavani, Punjabi, Rajasthani, Odia, Bihu, and Tamil traditions. According to video recordings from the event, the transitions between styles were seamless and visually striking.
Organizers share their excitement
Speaking to ANI, event organizer Shalini Kothari said the performance was the result of months of preparation. She described it as 800 dancers performing different types of dances in five minutes as we tried to enter into the Malaysia Book of Records. She added that the aim was not only to set a record but also to highlight the strength and unity of the Indian community living in Malaysia.
Recognition and diplomatic significance
The organizers requested officials from the Malaysia Book of Records to present the certificate at the venue immediately after the performance. This moment marked a significant cultural milestone between India and Malaysia.

It was also strongly associated with an official visit to Malaysia by Prime Minister Modi between 7 and 8 February which was his third visit to the country and the first since both countries promoted relations to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in August 2024, according to the Ministry of External Affairs.
Strong diaspora presence in Malaysia
During the visit, Prime Minister Modi also met members of the Indian diaspora and business representatives. Researchers estimate that the Indian population in Malaysia totals 2.9 million, making it the third-largest Indian diaspora in the world. The country still remains a key partner to India in ASEAN and the Indo-Pacific region and is a crucial element in the Act East Policy of India.
