Amidst the discussion on crime, rehabilitation and second chances in Singapore, David King’s life story has received a huge response on social media. In an online video, he told his story that the most important turning point in his life was inside prison.

The young man, who was involved in a violent gang clash in Little India in 2000, has now become an inspiration for social change. His story is not only personal but is also being considered a living example of Singapore’s rehabilitation system.

Little India Night

David King’s story begins in a turbulent time. At just 19 years old, he was attacked by three gangs while spending time with friends in Little India. Before he knew it, the conflict spread and he himself got involved. Although he later escaped, he realized that it was not possible to hide like this for the rest of his life. In the end, he decided to surrender, which initiated the first major change in his life.

Strict Prison Life

David was kept in the maximum security prison in Tanah Merah, which is known for its strict rules. It was not easy to spend the days there, especially the hardships of his family that shook him from within. Seeing his mother repeatedly suffering and coming to prison, he decided to change himself.

That’s when he thought of going back to his studies so that at least he could be a source of pride in his mother’s eyes.

Education in Prison

Teachers from the Singapore Ministry of Education would come to the prison to teach the prisoners, and David made full use of that opportunity. He filled his cell with notes, mind maps, and books.

He would memorize readings as he walked and gradually regained his confidence. As a result of this perseverance, he passed his N-Level, O-Level, and later A-Level exams in prison.

University Door

David’s dedication came to the attention of a counselor in the prison. On his initiative, representatives from the Singapore Management University came to interview David. Impressed by the interview, he was offered admission and a scholarship to the psychology department. However, university life after his release was a completely new challenge, where technology, transportation and social communication were all unfamiliar to him.

From Goal to Purpose

While studying at university, David broke down at one point and even thought about giving up everything. But in discussions with his counselor, he realized that although a degree was his goal, that was not the purpose of life. He decided to change the lives of others with his experiences. This thought led him to coaching, volunteering and inspirational work.

Netizens’ Reactions

Many people on social media have found reflections of their own lives in David’s story. Some have said that they have also been inspired to move forward through difficult times. Many have praised his efforts for change and his giving-back mentality.

Others have commented that, along with personal initiatives, the social assistance system needs to be made simpler and more humane so that those in real need receive timely help.

Giving Back to Society

Today, David King is known as a coach and author. Many young people have come to him to tell him that they have been able to leave gangs and start a new life or have recovered from suicidal thoughts. According to David, working with compassion and patience will pay off one day. His story has brought the importance of rehabilitation in Singapore and the need for humanitarian assistance to the fore.
