A Malaysian company has been fined RM10,000 after admitting to selling a coffee product that contained tadalafil, a prescription drug classified as a controlled poison.
The fine was imposed by the Selayang Sessions Court after the company pleaded guilty to the charge under the Food Act 1983.
Product Found to Contain Prescription Drug
The case involved 40 sachets of “Kopi Jantan Tradisional” (also known as Healthy Man Coffee), which were sold for RM132 at a food premises in Batu Caves, Gombak.

Laboratory tests found the coffee contained 1,310.61 mg/kg of tadalafil, a substance prohibited from being added to food products. The offence took place at 12pm on 11 August, 2025.
Court Proceedings and Sentence
The company OSW Trade Marketing & Supply was represented by its director, Teh Yew Sim, who was unrepresented in court and pleaded guilty as a summoned person.

Sessions Court Judge Norazlin Othman imposed the RM10,000 fine and ordered that a warrant of levy be issued if the fine was not paid. The fine was subsequently settled.
Under the law, the offence carries a maximum penalty of a RM20,000 fine, up to five years’ imprisonment, or both.
Health Risks Highlighted by Prosecutors
Prosecuting officer V.S. Vivig Dinesh from the Gombak District Health Office told the court that tadalafil is a prescription-only drug that may only be administered by registered medical practitioners.

She warned that consuming the coffee could pose serious health risks, including:
-
Sudden drops in blood pressure
-
Cardiovascular complications
-
Dangerous interactions with heart medications, particularly those containing nitrates
-
Heart attacks and strokes

She added that cases involving the illegal addition of poisons to food products have been increasing, often driven by profit with little regard for public safety.
Appeal for Leniency
Teh appealed for leniency, telling the court that he is his family’s sole breadwinner. He also expressed remorse and promised that the offence would not be repeated.
Similar Coffee Products Flagged Earlier
In March last year, another Malaysia-made coffee product marketed for male enhancement was found to contain tadalafil during checks, raising similar health concerns about unregulated coffee products sold both offline and online.

Tadalafil misuse has been linked to severe side effects, including irregular heart rhythms and prolonged, painful erections.
