This was something unusual when people were walking through Bukit Bintang and they noticed a sight that was eye-catching.

A tall man dressed like Sun Wukong of the popular game Black Myth: Wukong was walking with a relaxed stroll amidst the swarming Kuala Lumpur streets. Most of them paused to take pictures and have a look wondering whether people were shooting some film out there.

The person wearing the costume is a 25-year-old man called Hong Lei who is a cosplayer with his home being Shaanxi, China. Hong Lei measures 190 centimeters in height and his presence and well-articulated outfit made him stand out among one of the most active places in Kuala Lumpur. His cosplay garnered much attention among the tourists, shoppers and the local fans.

An impressive gaze of a legendary inspiration

One of the renowned Chinese mythological figures is Sun Wukong or the Monkey King. Black Myth: Wukong presents the character in a darker and more effective style. The costume of Hong Lei adhered to this design, although there were several details of armor, good make-up, and sure movements.

Hong Lei did not hurry or be noisy as he passed through Bukit Bintang. Instead, he walked slowly, and people were able to take pleasure in the close-up. The cosplay was more impressive and realistic because of his quiet confidence.

Most of the onlookers remarked that it was as though the Monkey King had gone out of the game into reality.

Managing a rising cosplay subculture

Hong Lei does not only happen to be a cosplayer. He is the head of the Great Sage Heavens Group, a cosplay group that produces designs of high quality, based on Chinese culture. The company specializes in the adaptation of old tales and characters to new life by designing costumes and acting in an innovative way.

Hong Lei has received a great follow up on social media. He has over 166,000 followers on Douyin where he posts photos and videos of his cosplay activities. The appearance of his Bukit Bintang was also shown to international followers, where numerous clips have been posted on platforms.

Bridging the gap between cultures by means of cosplay

The costume feature was not the only thing in the walk by Hong Lei through Kuala Lumpur. It demonstrated the connection between people of other countries by means of common interest and visual narration through cosplay. The audience of Black Myth: Wukong immediately knew why Wukong was the character, and others were eager to learn more and enquire.
