University Cooperates Fully with Investigators
On 12 January, at around 11:45am, an explosion occurred at a cafeteria of a private university in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. In a more recent update, the private university involved has now said it is fully cooperating with authorities following a deadly explosion on its Bukit Damansara campus, confirming that one person was killed and nine others injured.
In its latest update, the institution said it is working closely with the building owner, management company and emergency agencies to determine the cause of the blast. The affected building has been closed, while internal safety checks across its other campuses have begun.
Evacuation, Injuries and One Fatality Confirmed
According to official statements, students and staff were immediately evacuated under emergency protocols after the explosion. Nine people sustained injuries, and this included students, staff, contractors and cafeteria workers.
The fatality involved a 24-year-old external contractor who later died while receiving treatment at Hospital Kuala Lumpur. Authorities confirmed that two other contractors suffered serious injuries.
Explosion Linked to Air-Conditioning Maintenance Works
Police and fire officials said the explosion occurred in a maintenance area next to the cafeteria on the fourth floor, where contractors were repairing an air-conditioning compressor at the time.
Initial findings suggest the blast was caused by a gas leak from the compressor. Investigators said there were no signs of criminal elements involved.
Structural Damage, Hazmat Checks Conducted
According to the Fire and Rescue Department, even though there was no fire, the fourth floor was approximately 30% structurally damaged. The team of hazmat experts was sent to check for possible gas leaks and they eventually declared the place safe.
Multiple fire stations’ emergency crews took part in the incident, while the place was isolated for investigation.
Campus Operations and Next Steps
The university announced that its other campus in Subang Bestari is still functioning. In that location, classes and operations going on as normal.
The university also said that it is in touch with the families of those affected and is providing help where it is needed.
The incident took place at HELP University, which is situated on Jalan Semantan in Bukit Damansara.
