A female tourist narrowly survived a life-threatening accident after being swept into the sea by a powerful wave at a coastal attraction in Egypt. The incident happened on 7 December at the Matrouh Eye scenic area in the city of Mersa Matruh.

The woman, who is from China, was posing for a photograph when the wave suddenly crashed into her, shocking onlookers and viewers online.
Wave strikes without warning
The Matrouh Eye is known for its dramatic rocks and strong waves. On the day of the incident, the tourist was sitting on the edge of a rocky ledge near the water. She was wearing an orange summer dress and appeared calm as the sea moved behind her.

In the video , a large wave quickly rose and rushed toward her. Within seconds, the wave hit her body, knocked her down, and pulled her off the rocks into the open sea. The moment happened so fast that there was no time to react.
Dragged into the sea
The video shows the foamy wave crashing over the ledge and completely covering the woman. She disappeared from view as the water dragged her away. People nearby could be seen reacting in shock as the strong water currents moved around the rocks.

The woman struggled in the water but managed to stay afloat. The sea conditions were rough, making the situation even more dangerous.
Injuries but no serious harm
After the incident, the woman spoke to local media. She said she suffered several abrasions on her body and described the experience as “very frightening.” Despite the impact and rough water, she was lucky not to suffer serious injuries.
She explained that she was able to return to shore by holding onto a safety rope near the rocks. The rope helped her pull herself back to safety after being dragged into the sea.
Popular spot with hidden dangers
The Matrouh Eye scenic area is a popular viewpoint on Egypt’s Mediterranean coast. Tourists often visit to take photos of the clear blue water and unique rock formations. However, waves can crash suddenly against the rocks, even when the sea looks calm.

The exposed ledges offer dramatic views but can be dangerous, especially when visitors sit close to the waterline.
Similar incidents reported elsewhere
This incident has drawn attention because it follows other photo-related accidents around the world. Earlier this year, a tourist died after falling from a train in Sri Lanka while posing for a picture. Another tourist also lost his life in Colombia last year after falling from a viewpoint while taking a selfie.
These incidents highlight how quickly a moment meant for photos can turn dangerous in high-risk locations.
@dailymailau Following the ordeal, she told local media that she suffered multiple abrasions to her body and described the experience as ‘very frightening’. She said that she was lucky not to be seriously injured and would be more cautious when travelling in the future. The woman added that she had miraculously managed to get back to shore by holding onto a safety rope at the site. #tourism #ocean #news #australia #fyp
