Penang Island has announced the launch of the Penang Princess, a luxury cruise ship that will offer dining and sightseeing experiences on the Straits of Malacca. Penang Port Commission chairman Datuk Yeoh Soon Hin said the project will usher in a new era in the state’s maritime tourism. He said Penang has been at the forefront of land-based attractions; now it is time to see Penang from the sea.

The initiative will add a new dimension to tourism and create opportunities for local businesses. It will also put Penang firmly on the regional maritime tourism map.
Luxurious Design and Amenities
The cruise ship will be 61.58 meters long. Its interior design was done by renowned Vietnamese designer Ngo Thi Quynh Nga. It will combine British colonial touches with oriental features. As a result, passengers will get a taste of Penang’s multicultural heritage. The cruise will also feature fine dining, live entertainment and scenic views of the strait.

Economic Potential
The project will also play a major role in the local economy. When the cruise is launched, new jobs will be created in various sectors, including hospitality, logistics, and food supply. At the same time, it will attract high-spending tourists, which will increase the tourism revenue in Penang.

Yeoh Soon Hin said that this initiative is not just a ship; it is the birth of a new industry for Penang. As a result, Penang’s overall economic dynamism will increase further.
Cooperation and Construction Plan
A memorandum of understanding has been signed on 21 November, for this project between Ocean World Cruises Berhad, Viet Princess Cruises Corporation, VISEC and SCM. It is intended to be finished and launched in 2027. The relevant companies have long-standing experience in marine design, safety and engineering.

The concept of the project began in 2020, when the old ferry restaurant plan failed. Founder Kenny Nai later teamed up with Vietnamese cruise entrepreneur Truong Quang Kung after extensive research. Construction will take two years and will be funded by private investment.
Special Event Venue
Ultimately, Penang Princess will become an iconic venue for weddings at sea, corporate galas, cultural exhibitions and premium events, opening up new opportunities for Penang’s waterfront tourism and further expanding the island’s appeal.
