A quiet afternoon in the small French town of Neuville-sur-Saône turned into an unbelievable moment when a man digging a swimming pool in his backyard uncovered bags filled with gold. This quickly became one of the most talked-about stories in the region since May.

Wrapped carefully in plastic bags, the treasure contained five gold bars and a large number of gold coins, all in surprisingly good condition.
A Simple Dig Becomes a Shocking Find
The man had only planned to create a small pool for his family. As he dug deeper into the soil, his shovel hit something hard. At first, he thought it was just a rock, but when he cleared the dirt, he saw a plastic bag with a heavy object inside.

The man reportedly opened the bag and found shiny gold bars with identification numbers clearly marked on them. More bags nearby held dozens of gold coins, each protected to prevent damage.
Authorities Step In to Verify the Treasure
Not knowing what to do next, he immediately contacted local authorities. Police officers and state officials arrived to inspect the gold.
They checked the identification codes on the bars and examined the coins one by one.
Gold Proven to Be Legally Acquired
Experts later confirmed that the treasure was not ancient. In fact, it was estimated to be only 15 to 20 years old. Since each bar had a unique official number, investigators were able to determine that the gold was originally purchased legally.
The officials then informed the homeowner that the treasure did not belong to the state.
A Legal but Mysterious Ownership
Under the French civil code, if an item is found on someone’s property and has no archaeological value, the owner of the land is allowed to keep it.

With this rule, the man was officially granted ownership of the entire collection, valued at around S$1,058,631. He later shared that he never imagined discovering something so valuable under his own garden.
A Question That Remains Unanswered
While the man is legally allowed to keep the treasure, one detail continues to puzzle everyone: why was the gold buried there in the first place?

Investigators reviewed past records and learned that the previous owner of the house had already passed away. Because of that, the reason for hiding such a large amount of gold will likely remain a mystery forever.
A Backyard That Changed a Quiet Life
Today, the man continues preparing his swimming pool, but now with extra caution. What started as a normal home project has turned his backyard into one of the most unexpected discovery sites in the country.
Neighbours say the story has brought excitement to their usually calm street, and people still stop by hoping to hear how the discovery unfolded in real life.
