A Late-Night Rescue That Wasn’t What It Seemed

What began as a frantic report of an abduction in Bangladesh’s Cox’s Bazar ended with a surprising confession. Police in Teknaf’s Subrang Union rescued 55-year-old Md. Abu Hanif after a four-hour operation — only to discover that the “victim” had staged his own kidnapping to demand approximately S$4259 (Tk 400,000) from his first wife.

Police rescued him on 22 November, nine days after he disappeared from his home in Hathazari. Authorities tracked him down to where he was hiding at his second wife’s father’s house.

A Secret Marriage and a Scripted Kidnapping

Investigators said the drama started on 13 November, when Hanif quietly left his home in Hathazari. Without telling his first wife, he had recently married a second wife, 35-year-old Sanjida Begum, a widow from the same village.

Facing alleged long-standing marital conflict and fearing fallout from the secret marriage, Hanif reportedly decided to stage his disappearance.

During interrogation, he admitted that he asked his brother-in-law, Kasim, to tie his hands and feet and lash him to a tree in a seaside casuarina forest. Kasim also recorded a video showing Hanif bound — footage that was later sent to the family with a demand for S$4259 (Tk 400,000) in ransom.

Police recovered two mobile phones, five SIM cards and the video used in the extortion attempt.

A Plan to Flee to Malaysia After Collecting the Money

Police said Hanif’s plan didn’t end with the ransom. Once the money was secured, he allegedly intended to leave for Malaysia with his second wife and her two children.

The plan fell apart after officers traced his location through digital surveillance and brought him back safely.

He has since been handed over to his brother, and local police have been notified to take further action.
