The incident of saving the life of a passenger on Malaysia Airlines flight MH2574 on 1 November, Saturday has become discussed as a ‘heroic’ moment on social media. Dr Chung Ghi Waie, a pediatrician at Selesa Pacific Hospital, was returning home from a trip to Japan when a woman suddenly developed shortness of breath and severe chest pain.

Dr. Chung rushed to the scene without a moment’s delay after receiving an emergency call from the flight crew. Despite limited equipment and being far from the operating theatre, he was able to stabilise the passenger. The patient was breathing normally when the plane landed in Miri.
Emergency Response In The Air
Dr. Chung did not sit still as soon as he heard the flight crew’s announcement. The woman was clutching her shoulder in a situation that could have quickly escalated into a dangerous situation.

Dr. Chung first provided the necessary assistance to keep her breathing normal. The situation was brought under control within minutes. Without his quick response, the patient’s condition could have deteriorated further.
The Doctor’s Humility
Dr. Chung, however, was humble about his role. He said that it was his professional duty, not something ‘heroic’. He was grateful that he was able to provide the right help at the right time. The patient received prompt treatment, which is most important to him. The Citi Chaser Pickleball Club requested the airlines to sponsor his honeymoon ticket!

Social Media Showered With Gratitude
Many commented that the cabin crew’s quick announcement and preparation helped save lives. Some thanked the doctor and wrote that such skills in such situations are commendable. Some said that Dr. Doctors like Chung are a true asset to society.

Many have also felt that the presence of such a kind-hearted doctor adds a sense of security to any flight.
The mother and brother of the sick passenger later posted a thank-you note on Facebook, which went viral in an instant. Netizens called him a ‘hero physician’. Many wrote that any doctor would do their duty in an emergency, but Dr. Chung showed an example of true humanity.
