A Routine Car Wash Gone Wrong

What was meant to be a regular car wash in Johor Bahru turned into a stressful ordeal for one Singaporean driver.

In a TikTok video that has now gone viral with over 500,000 views, user @/follownat recounted how staff at ALAM SHAH Car Wash, located opposite Shell Pelangi, refused to clean his vehicle after he declined a pricier “water wax treatment”.

“He refused to wash my car after I rejected his upselling of “water wax treatment”. His reason for refusing to wash? Because not enough customers that day. So he will only do “water wax treatment” no “normal wash,” the man wrote in his post.

Confrontation Turned Aggressive

When the driver attempted to leave, the situation escalated.

He claimed that several employees became “aggressive”, with one of them even pulling on his car door to stop him from closing it. The group then demanded that he delete the video he had recorded of the encounter.

“Tried to leave, and they got aggressive even pulling on my car door so it wouldn’t close and forced me to delete the video,” he said.

The footage shows workers confronting him, with one repeatedly questioning, “What is your problem? Why you take video?”

“Water Wax Treatment” — A Common Upsell

Regular customers familiar with JB’s many car wash and detailing shops say it is common for staff to offer additional services such as “water wax treatment” or polishing.

“Usually people will just go for a normal soap and water wash at 12-15RM but these people will always try to upsell “water wax treatment scam” at a more expensive price of 85RM,” the driver mentioned in the comments.

Some Singaporean drivers online have described such tactics as “scams”, warning others to double-check prices before agreeing to any treatment.

Poor Reviews and Complaints Online

The ALAM SHAH Car Wash already has a one-star rating from multiple reviewers on Google.

Most complaints mention similar experiences — pushy upselling, rude staff, and even unauthorised application of polishing compound despite customer objections.

Viewer Reactions

Most viewers sied with the driver in the video. Many recounted having faced similar upselling.

Others noted facing similar issues at the same car wash.

Allegedly, the same car wash had a habit of replacing/selling windshield wipers, as two separate commenters mentioned.

Warning to Fellow Drivers

With many Singaporeans driving up to Johor Bahru, the viral post struck a chord.

“Warning to all Singaporean drivers. Beware of ALAM SHAH Car Wash (opposite Shell Pelangi),” the man concluded in his video caption.
