Chaos as Strong Winds Hit Kepong

On 5 October, severe winds and hail slammed through Kepong, Malaysia. A viral video captured a chaotic scene at a restaurant in the area, where strong winds and heavy rain swept through.

In the 51-second clip, employees rushed to secure outdoor furniture as chairs flew into the car park.

At one point, a man slipped and fell as others leaned forward against. People struggled to move against the force of the wind.

Soon after, a chair flew into the fallen individual.

“Don’t go there! Don’t go there!” someone shouted at a child nearby as the storm intensified.

Another clip shared on a Facebook page showed canopies from street food stalls being ripped away.

With them, tree branches and metal rods also crashed to the ground.

MP Lim Lip Eng: “We Are On-Site To Help”

Kepong Member of Parliament Lim Lip Eng confirmed that a thunderstorm and hailstorm struck the area in the evening, causing several large trees to fall.

“I would like to inform you that we are already on-site to monitor the situation and ensure that aid reaches those who need it,” he said.

Facebook Post

“Our highest appreciation goes to our heroes from the Kuala Lumpur City Hall emergency squad, volunteer firefighters, and all the agencies who have been working tirelessly since earlier to clear roads, remove fallen trees, and assist residents.” he added.

What Caused the Powerful Gusts

Some speculate that a ‘wind-tunnel effect could explain the incident. Powerful gusts, as observed in the video, often strike harder in certain spots because of the way buildings allow the wind to channel through. When air funnels through narrow openings or gets squeezed between structures, it speeds up to create stronger, concentrated winds. This effect, sometimes called a wind tunnel, can make even moderate storms feel much more intense.

Observers believe the extreme winds were amplified as air funneled through a narrow entrance.

The building’s structure compressed the airflow, intensifying the gusts, they assumed.

Online Reaction

The footage quickly spread across social media, sparking widespread attention and amusement among viewers.

While the storm left damage, no casualties were reported.
