Doctors Remove Knife Stuck in Man’s Chest for Eight Years

Unexpected Hospital Discovery

Doctors at Muhimbili National Hospital in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, made a shocking discovery when a 44-year-old patient arrived with a complaint of pus discharging below his right nipple.

Despite this unusual symptom, the man had no chest pain, difficulty breathing, coughing, or fever. His vital signs were also reported to be normal, leaving medical staff puzzled, according to the Journal of Surgical Case Reports.

A Violent Altercation Years Ago

The man eventually recalled that nearly a decade earlier, he had been injured during an altercation. At the time, he sustained cuts to his face, back, chest, and abdomen, which were treated by doctors.

What neither he nor his medical team realized then was that a knife blade had actually penetrated his chest and remained inside his body.

Imaging Reveals the Cause

A chest radiograph later revealed the true source of his infection: a large knife blade lodged in the mid-thorax.

The scan also showed that the blade had entered through the right scapula but miraculously avoided major organs.

This explained why the patient had been able to live normally for years without any serious health problems, according to the case report cited by The Mirror.

Surgery and Recovery

Surgeons at Muhimbili carefully removed the knife blade and drained the pus, which had been caused by dead tissue.

After the operation, the man was kept in the ICU for 24 hours before being transferred to a general ward, where he stayed for 10 days under observation.

Follow-up appointments showed that his recovery was smooth, with doctors describing his post-surgery progress as “uneventful.”

Meanwhile, in 2025, China, a six-year-old boy in China suffered a horrifying accident when he fell while eating a lollipop, causing the bamboo stick to pierce through his brain.

Miraculously, he made a full recovery and was discharged two weeks later.
