Robbery Turns Fatal
On the afternoon of 18 February, a 54-year-old man was shot and killed during an attempted robbery on Quintino Street, in the Jardim José Bonifácio neighborhood of Baixada Fluminense, Brazil.
The victim, Eduardo da Silva Soares, owned a small business in the area and was reportedly working at the time of the incident.
Surveillance footage from the scene shows a man entering Eduardo’s establishment before pushing and slapping him. Moments later, the suspect fired a shot at close range. Eduardo collapsed while the gunman went to the cashier to steal money. Before fleeing, the assailant returned to take a key from Eduardo’s pocket.
Emergency Response and Investigation
The local fire station received an emergency call around 3:15 p.m. Paramedics were dispatched quickly but Eduardo succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
Officers from the Baixada Fluminense Homicide Division (DHBF) have launched an investigation. The Civil Police confirmed their involvement and stated they are reviewing footage and gathering witness statements. So far, no arrests have been made.
Community Shocked by Violence
Eduardo’s death has triggered an outpouring of grief and frustration. Residents expressed their anger and sadness on social media, calling attention to the city’s growing insecurity. Many echoed a common sentiment: that São João de Meriti has become increasingly unsafe.
Eduardo’s brother, Roberto Soares, voiced his sorrow and called for justice. He revealed that Eduardo had been planning to move away because of rising violence in the area.
Authorities Seek Help
The Disque-Denúncia service has asked for public assistance in identifying the suspect. Tipsters can contact authorities at (21) 2253-1177.
The investigation continues as Eduardo’s family and community demand answers and greater security in a city where crime has once again claimed an innocent life.
