In Greece, a woman has filed for divorce after an unusual morning coffee ritual ended with a shocking revelation not from a reliable source, but from ChatGPT.

The woman reportedly used the AI chatbot to interpret the leftover coffee grounds in her husband’s cup, and what followed was a mix of disbelief, confusion, and legal action.
A Modern Spin on an Old Tradition
The couple shared 12 years of marriage and were parents to two children. One morning, the wife made them both Greek coffee, a tradition in many households, and decided to photograph the grounds left behind in their cups.

She then asked ChatGPT to interpret the patterns, using it as a digital stand-in for a tasseography reading.
What Is Tasseography?
Tasseography, also known as tasseomancy or tassology, is the practice of interpreting patterns made by tea leaves, coffee grounds, or even wine sediments at the bottom of a cup, according to Tasseography.com.

Though often associated with Romani culture, the practice has roots in Ancient Greece, the Middle East, Asia, and even modern-day Europe.
Traditionally, readings involve more than just the grounds. Experts often consider the shape, placement, and even the foam or residue left in the saucer, all of which can’t be fully analysed by AI.
Their Cups’ Readings
According to Greek City Times, ChatGPT’s reading of her husband’s coffee cup suggested he was fantasizing about a mysterious woman whose name began with “E” and that he was meant to start a relationship with her.
The reading of her own cup, on the other hand, claimed something even more serious: that her husband was already cheating, and that the other woman was determined to destroy their home.
What Began as a Game Quickly Escalated
The husband recalled how it all started on the Greek morning show To Proino. He explained that his wife enjoys exploring new trends and thought it would be amusing to get their coffee cups “read” by an AI.
But the playful mood didn’t last long.
Husband Laughed It Off, Wife Reacted Strongly
While the husband didn’t think much of the reading and brushed it off, his wife reacted strongly.
She asked him to move out, informed their children about their divorce, and shortly after, he received a call from a lawyer.

That’s when he realised things had gone far beyond a casual experiment.
She proceeded to serve him divorce papers just three days after he declined to consent to a mutual separation.

Not the First Time She’s Turned to the Supernatural
The husband also shared that this wasn’t the first time his wife had been influenced by mystical or spiritual guidance.
He mentioned a previous situation when she took an astrologer’s predictions very seriously and said it took her about a year to let go of those beliefs.
His lawyer later confirmed that any claims made by an AI chatbot have no legal basis, stressing that the husband remains “innocent until proven otherwise.”
