A Terrifying Accident While Eating Candy
A six-year-old boy in China suffered a horrifying injury when he fell while eating a maltose lollipop, causing the bamboo stick to pierce through his mouth and reach his brain.

The incident happened on Wednesday (26 March) when the boy, identified as Xiao Zhu, was holding the lollipop, Guangzhou Daily reported, cited by Sinar Harian.
Stick Pierced Through Mouth, Rushed to Hospital
As he fell, he instinctively put out his hands to stop himself, but this action caused the lollipop stick to be pushed into his mouth, reaching the base of his skull.
He experienced excruciating pain, and his parents rushed him to the hospital.
CT Scan Revealed The Extent of the Injury
At Zhongshan First Hospital, doctors immediately conducted an emergency CT scan.

The scan showed that an 11-centimeter bamboo stick had penetrated the part of his brain responsible for movement and coordination.

Doctors classified his condition as critical, warning that removing the stick would be extremely risky.
A Life-or-Death Operation
“The stick had hit a major blood vessel at the base of the skull that sends blood from the brain to the heart,” Dr. Guo Shaolei, the hospital’s chief surgeon said.
He also stated that any mistake during the procedure could have led to severe bleeding, turning it into a life-or-death situation.
A specialized team, including neurosurgeons, anesthetists, pediatricians, and dentists, was assembled to plan the procedure carefully.

7-Hour Surgery Saved His Life
After seven tense hours in the operating room, doctors successfully removed the bamboo stick without damaging his brain or blood vessels.
Miraculously, Xiao Zhu made a full recovery. He suffered no nerve damage or complications and was discharged from the hospital two weeks later.
Surgeon Warns Parents About Eating While Moving
Following the incident, Dr. Guo warned parents about the dangers of letting children move around while eating, especially when holding sharp objects like lollipop sticks or chopsticks.
He also advised parents to stay calm in emergencies and to avoid pulling out any object embedded in the body, as doing so could worsen internal injuries.
Instead, he urged them to seek immediate medical attention.
