Dashcam Footage Shows Shocking Incident
A motorcyclist in South Korea tragically lost his life after plunging into a massive sinkhole that suddenly opened beneath him.
A dashcam video, widely shared on South Korean social media, captured the moment the road caved in at an intersection in the Myeongil-dong neighborhood in eastern Seoul on Monday, March 24, around 6:30 PM local time.
In the footage, a car driving ahead of the motorcyclist narrowly escaped disaster, bouncing slightly as it passed over the area just before the ground gave way.
The motorcyclist, however, had no time to react and was swallowed by the massive hole.
Victim Found After Hours of Search
Rescue teams searched through the night to find the victim. He was later identified as 33-year-old Park, who had been making a delivery when the tragic incident occurred.
According to reports, he had been balancing two jobs—working full-time at an advertisement company while taking on delivery shifts in the evenings—to provide for his mother and younger sister after losing his father in an accident in 2018.

According to emergency officer Kim Chang Seop, Park’s body was recovered at around 11:22 AM on Tuesday (March 25), approximately 50 meters (164 feet) from where he initially fell.
According to BBC, rescuers had to pump out water and clear approximately 2,000 tons of soil to reach him.
They also used excavators and other equipment during the operation and it took them nearly 18 hours for them to find his body.

Before locating his body, they discovered his motorcycle and mobile phone. When found, the victim was still wearing his helmet and motorcycle boots.
Van Driver Sustains Minor Injuries
A woman driving a van was also affected by the collapse as she was passing over the site. Emergency responders stated she did not fall into the sinkhole and escaped with minor injuries
Authorities Investigating Cause of Sinkhole
The exact cause of the sinkhole remains under investigation.
Seoul Mayor Oh Se-Hoon visited the site on Monday night and instructed officials to conduct a thorough investigation to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
A Similar Incident in Kuala Lumpur
This tragic event in Seoul echoes a similar case in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, last year. In August 2024, a 48-year-old woman fell into a sinkhole on Jalan Masjid India while walking past a concrete block.
CCTV footage captured the moment she suddenly disappeared into the hole.
Rescue teams worked tirelessly to locate her, using excavators and specialized equipment to dig through the collapsed area. However, after a week of searching, the operation was called off without finding the victim.
