A Singaporean man was injured while protecting his family from attackers who had harassed them for three consecutive days during Chinese New Year in Kampung Tengah, Kluang, Johor.
Three days of harassment turn violent
According to reports, the harassment started during the festive season, spanning three days before the violent confrontation on January 31. It was also reported that the man was in Johor to accompany his wife to celebrate Chinese New Year at her hometown.
The attackers, two men, allegedly disturbed the family by setting off firecrackers, splashing paint outside their home, and smashing the windows of two cars.
The attack Caught on Camera
A 45-second video of the incident, showing one of the attackers smashing a car window with a wooden stick, surfaced online.
Two masked men reportedly armed with metal rods approached the family’s home around 5:50 AM on January 31.
CCTV footage captured one of them damaging a car parked outside the house, with the other recording the incident, while a third suspect was believed to be waiting in a getaway vehicle.
Hearing the commotion, three men from the household armed themselves with rods and fought back the attackers.
A struggle ensued, during which one suspect fled, while another attempted to run but fell, allowing the family to subdue him before police arrived.
Victim Sustained Multiple Injuries and Suspect Paid to Harass Family
Following this, the man sustained multiple injuries to his head, ankle, chest, and arms.
It is reported that the suspect later revealed that he had been paid RM200 (approx. S$60) to harass them.
Family Not Involved with Loan Sharks
Ms. Fang, the wife of the injured Singaporean man, clarified that their family does not owe any money to loan sharks. In addition, the attackers left behind no debt collection notices.
Her mother also shared that similar harassment occurred in 2023 and 2024, but despite multiple police reports, no updates had been received from authorities.
One Suspect Arrested
China Press reported that police were alerted to the incident at 5:50 AM and arrived at the scene by 6:10 AM.
Kluang district police chief Assistant Commissioner Bahrin Mohd. Noh confirmed the arrest of a 37-year-old Malaysian man.
Authorities later revealed that the suspect had two prior criminal cases and five drug-related offenses and tested positive for methamphetamine.
Police Hunting for Two Other Accomplices
Following the arrest, police launched a search for two more suspects who managed to escape.
According to a statement from Bahrin,
“Two other accomplices managed to escape, and efforts to track them down are ongoing,” he said in a statement today.
The arrested suspect has been remanded until February 3 to assist with investigations.
