Accusations of theft can often lead to strong, sometimes violent reactions, as individuals or groups seek immediate justice. In some cases, these reactions turn into mob violence, bypassing the legal process entirely.
This was the unfortunate reality for 25-year-old Shravan Kumar in India, who faced a brutal assault after being accused of stealing a motorcycle.
Allegations of Theft
On Friday, January 8, 2025, in Bhakharpura village, Rajasthan, India, Kumar, a “Dalit” man (a member of the lowest social class in the Hindu caste system) was accused of stealing a motorcycle.
According to reports, prior to this, he had been arrested on December 29, 2024, for allegedly stealing a bike at a local fair, but was released on bail just days before the attack.
According to NDTV, after his release, villagers accused him of stealing yet another motorcycle—a claim Kumar denied.
Without waiting for legal procedures, the villagers took matters into their own hands. They confronted Kumar, tied his hands and legs, hung him upside down from a tree, and beat him.
It was also reported that the villagers used both sticks and fists during the assault.
Despite Kumar’s repeated pleas for mercy, the attackers demanded that he confess to the theft, all while recording the assault on video.
The 53-second clip of the attack went viral on social media.
Police Action Following Viral Video
The viral video quickly spread, prompting local authorities to take action. Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Sukhram Bishnoi confirmed that a case was filed based on Kumar’s complaint.
Bishnoi stated that a detailed investigation was underway to identify those responsible for the attack.
SC/ST Act Invoked
According to The Hindustan Times, the case is being investigated under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, a law in India designed to protect individuals from violence and discrimination based on social class.
Authorities have assured the public that strict legal action will be taken against those responsible for the assault.
