Colombian Congresswoman Cathy Juvinao Apologizes for Vaping During Health Reform Debate

Colombian Congresswoman Cathy Juvinao, representing Bogotá and a member of the Green Alliance Party, made headlines for an unexpected reason during a parliamentary session.

As legislators debated crucial reforms to the healthcare system, Juvinao was caught on camera vaping inside the chamber—a setting where smoking and vaping are strictly prohibited.

The video, which went viral shortly after the session, shows Juvinao inhaling from a yellow vape. Upon realizing the camera had zoomed in on her, she quickly attempted to conceal the vape.

However, the smoke coming from her nose and mouth made it obvious, only drawing more attention to the situation.

Acknowledging the Mistake

Reacting swiftly to the backlash, Juvinao took to X to apologize. She acknowledged her mistake and expressed regret for setting a bad example in such a high-profile and important setting.

In her words, “I apologize to the citizens for what happened yesterday in the plenary session.”

Public and Political Reactions

While some social media users appreciated Juvinao’s quick apology, others were less forgiving. According to the Daily Mail, her critics included rival politicians, who pointed out the irony of her actions during a health-related debate.

Representative Eduard Sarmiento also pointed out the existing law banning vapes in public indoor spaces, emphasizing its intent to protect non-smokers. “No cheap moralism, but the laws must be obeyed,” he said on X.

Lessons in Accountability

The incident has drawn attention to more than just Juvinao’s mistake. According to USA Today, smoking and vaping are banned in government buildings in Colombia, including parliamentary chambers.

Earlier this year, President Gustavo Petro also signed legislation aimed at regulating the sale of electronic cigarettes and vaping devices across the country.

While the vaping incident might seem small to some, it highlights the important role public figures play in setting a positive example for others. By owning up to her mistake, Juvinao has taken a step toward rebuilding trust with the public.

However, the mixed reactions show that even a sincere apology doesn’t always repair a reputation right away.
