When enjoying time on the water, safety should always come first. Wearing life jackets and following safety guidelines can be the difference between a fun outing and a tragic accident. Unfortunately, this lesson came too late for two Brazilian influencers.
On September 29, 2024, Aline Tamara Moreira de Amorim, 37, and Beatriz Tavares da Silva Faria, 27, faced a devastating outcome while returning from a luxury yacht party off the coast of São Paulo. In a tragic choice, they refused to wear life jackets, believing it would ruin their photos and tanning.
Selfies Over Safety
Eyewitness accounts reveal that the influencers prioritized their appearance over safety. According to São Vincente Police Commissioner Marcos Alexandra Alfino, some passengers did not want to wear life jackets because they were busy taking selfies. The two women specifically cited concerns that the jackets would hinder their tanning experience.
The small speedboat was already overloaded, carrying six passengers when it should have only had five. As it navigated the treacherous waters in the Devil’s Throat area, the boat struggled against the waves before ultimately capsizing, throwing all passengers into the choppy current.
Survivors described a chaotic scene as waves swamped the boat. Vanessa Audrey da Silva, one of the survivors, recalled the panic: “There was a moment in the water when no one could see anyone. I was fighting for my life,” she said, emphasizing the danger they faced.
A Painful Aftermath
Faria’s body was found shortly after the incident by Brazil’s maritime firefighters. It took a week to locate Amorim’s body, which washed up on Itaquitanduva Beach.
Just moments before the tragedy, Amorim had shared cheerful pictures on social media, capturing the joyful atmosphere of the gathering.
While under police questioning, the captain of the speedboat stated that he was ordered to transport the six influencers despite the boat’s maximum capacity of five passengers. He noted that this overcrowding made it difficult for the vessel to handle the rough waves.
While he tried to rescue the passengers, the sudden capsizing left little time for response.
Investigations and Safety Precautions
Local authorities are investigating the incident to determine if it resulted from recklessness or negligence. Commissioner Alfino mentioned that the inquiry is being conducted carefully to understand the circumstances surrounding the fatalities.
This tragedy highlights the importance of safety. Life jackets, while sometimes viewed as an inconvenience, are essential for protection in unpredictable conditions. Safety should always come first, even in the pursuit of the perfect photo.
